Beijing 2008 Olympics
Take Action!

The Athens 2004 Olympics, and subsequent passing of the Olympic flag from Greece to China, signaled the beginning of an international campaign to use the 2008 Beijing Olympics to shine a spotlight on China's occupation of Tibet. The Chinese government hopes to use Beijing 2008 to gain recognition and acceptance as a legitimate world power, on the same footing as other democratic countries that have hosted the Games. The Olympics form part of the government's increasingly sophisticated effort to obscure its occupation of Tibet and human rights record from international scrutiny. Through our campaign, we will shift the focus of both the world and the Chinese government onto Tibet, calling on Beijing to free Tibet by 2008 or face massive protest during the 2008 Games.

Please help by taking the following actions:

1. Tell the Chinese government to leave Tibet
Write a letter to Hu Jintao, President of the People's Republic of China. In your letter,
" Call on the Chinese government to end its occupation of Tibet by 2008.
" Requst the release of all Tibetan political prisoners, including Tenzin Delek Rinpoche and Gendhun Choekyi Nyima, the Panchen Lama.
" Notify him that until China leaves Tibet, Tibetans and supporters will use the Olympic Games as a means of drawing attention to China's occupation of Tibet and its deplorable human rights record.
" Request assurance that freedom of expression, freedom of the press, and other international human rights be respected during the course of the Games, and that the Olympic Games will not be used as an excuse for a crackdown on human rights.
Send your letter to:
President of the People's Republic of China
Hu Jintao
Guojia Zhuxi
The State Council General Office - Yongneixijie

People's Republic of China
Salutation: Your Excellency

Salutation: Dear Mr. Qi

2. Submit a slogan for the 2008 Olympics!

The Beijing Organizing Committee recently put out a call for submissions a slogan to be used for the Beijing Olympics. The slogan will replace the one used for Beijing's Olympic bid, "New Beijing, Great Olympics." The deadline has now passed, but some slogans are never too old. What comes to mind when you think about China and Tibet ? Occupation, imprisonment, torture, mass repression, an authoritarian government, resistance, endurance...? Make up a short slogan about China and Tibet and submit it along with a short and courteous note of explanation to: xuanchuan@beijing-olympic.org.cn.

Here are the guidelines from the Beijing Organizing Committee to help get you thinking:

1. The participating Slogan should be an embodiment of the concept of "Green Olympics, Hi-Tech Olympics and People's Olympics" with "People's Olympic" as its highlight.
2. The Slogan should reflect the unique cultural background and humanism of China and Beijing.
3. The Slogan should be easy to read and remember, and can be understood and shared by people from different cultures.
4. The Slogan should be emotional and inspiring, and can be presented with strong visual effects.
5. The Slogan should also fully reflect the Olympic Spirit
