On Wednesday, May 27, Sangye Tso, a 36 year old Tibetan woman, mother of two children, set herself on fire outside a local Chinese official building, and near a monastery where teachings were being held for a Buddhist festival in Chone county, Kanlho, Gansu Province (Eastern Tibet). She succumbed to her burns, and her body was carried away by local Chinese authorities.

On Thursday, May 28, Regional Tibetan Youth Congress-Dharamshala, Regional Tibetan WOmen’s Association-Dharamshala, and Students for a Free Tibet-India organized a candlelight vigil at the Martyrs’ Pillar, at Tsuglakhang, Mcleodganj to remember Sangye Tso and the more than 140 Tibetans who have set themselves on fire since 2009 in protest of China’s harsh and oppressive policies.
